Code Geass Akito the Exile

Code Geass: Akito the Exiled (コードギアス 亡国のアキト, Kōdo Giasu
Bōkoku no Akito) is a theatrical OVA. It was officially announced in the bonus materials o of Code Geass: The Miraculous Birthday. The new theatrical OVA is directed by Kazuki Akane (Tenkuu no Escaflowne, Noein: Mou Hitori no Kimi e) and once again features original character designs by CLAMP. The story occurs between seasons one and two of Code Geass.

So, I finally found the time to watch the first part of the Code Geass Gaiden (spin-off) Akito the Exiled, which (for reasons I still have to find out) is called “The Wyvern has landed” (at the moment it can still be found on YouTube), and as is always the case with Code Geass, most people in the show are either psychopaths or very troubled or both (yes, I know, this is what actually gets the show going, but it also makes it very depressing).

The hero after whom the show is named, Akito Hyuuga, seems to belong to the “troubled” category. He’s a Japanese (or “Eleven”, as they are again called, even in Europe) who fights alongside other Japanese volunteers for the EU, which mostly uses them for suicide missions because sacrificing their own soldiers would create too much negative publicity (remember how Charles defined “democracy”? - “Rabble politics by a popularity contest”).  Although he seems a bit girlish, what with his ponytail and a uniform that gives him rather broad hips, he’s quite the tough fighter and a great Knightmare pilot. Compared to Lelouch, he clearly lacks his psychological depth, but on the positive side, he is also less of a prickschemer. He’s possibly under the influence of some Geass similar to the one Lelouch put on Suzaku, while he seems to have a brother (at least there’s someone who shares the same surname) who possesses a Geass similar to Lelouch’s.
His superior officer, Leila Malcal, is the child of Britannian aristocrats and also in exile. Her main problem seems to be that her stepfather (who takes obesity in anime to a new level) wants to marry her to her own stepbrother, who seems to qualify for the rank of bastard first class, as he does not mind humiliating her in public. If we want to compare again, she is no C.C. either, but at least she’s trying to do the right thing rather than just being Akito’s “partner in crime”.

We also learn some interesting facts about the E.U. (is it still supposed to stand for Euro Universe?), which seems to be dominated by France, as Paris is obviously its capital and all the documents we get to see are written in French. We are told that Napoleon was decapitated for trying to establish a dictatorship and we can assume that France used the hegemony that Napoleon had achieved to spread the ideals of the French Revolution all over Europe, and thus they became even more prevalent than in real history (remember Charles speaking of “the E.U. making equality a right”?) and it seems that Europen aristocrats are therefore inclined to support the Britannians. In spite of that, E.U. politicians seem to be just as ruthless and power-hungry as the Britannians. (Which is, maybe, not totally unrealistic. In fact, I can see the real-world E.U. develop in a similar direction.) Leila’s general even goes as far as to claim that a benevolent dicatorship would be preferrable to that (political correctness is clearly not Sunrise’s major concern). Moreover, the fact that Notre Dame is in ruins makes me fear that the E.U. has become as un- or even anti-Christian as the “Holy” Britannian Empire (whose sheer name is a travesty).

And then there’s the Japanese refugees. Again, the Japanese/Elevens are the underdogs of the show, either forced into ghettos or used as cannon fodder by the E.U., having to fight for their freedom and dignity at home and in exile. One wonders what kind of message this is supposed to convey to the Japanese audience.
At any rate, I’m one again captivated by the show and looking forward to the second part, ESPECIALLY since it obiously has Suzaku in it (and also C.C.).

Akito is an E.U. Knightmare Pilot with a rank of lieutenant from a special force, called W-0, that consists of boys and girls from Area 11. He is shown to be piloting the Knightmare FramesGardmareand Alexander.
It appears that he may be mentally unstable, as he is shown to enjoy battle to the point of blood lust, yet he appears completely calm under normal situations. He has a lack of emotion, not tending to display or express his emotions in anyway. He also mentions that he "has died before." At this time it is equally possible that this is due to mental instability.
Akito is under the effects of Geass that he appears to control at will, allowing him to savagely kill his enemies in the battlefield. When he used Alexander to ambush and destroy a full squad of Britannian Knightmare Frames, the enemy pilots referred to him as "Hannibal's Ghost".
Akito can also see the spirits of his fallen comrades and claims that he has already died once.
He, along with his other Japanese comrades, participated in a military operation with a survival rate of 5% in order to allow the E.U.Army's 132nd Regiment to escape from Narva. Akito was shown fighting the BritannianKnightmares using the Alexander. During the battle there was a red outline circling his pupils, which indicates that he had been previously Geassed. He also managed to destroy all his opponents without any difficulty and, although the military operation came out as a success, Akito turned out to be the only survivor while the rest of his comrades all ended up dead.
Following these events, he joined the retreating troops of the 132nd Regiment and returned to the western part of Europe. Akito was promoted to Lieutenant and then assigned to escort his superior, Leila Malkal. During the failed attempt to kidnap General Gene Smilas by a Japanese terrorist group, he piloted a Gardmare against Ryo Sayama's Glasgow. However, his Knightmare Frame gets destroyed during the battle. He then engages in battle with a grenade launcher and was able to defeat Ryo by bringing his Knightmare Frame down singlehandedly.
He is later shown digging a grave for his fallen comrades who had died in the previous military operation. Akito seems to be able to communicate to the spirits of his fallen comrades and also claims that he had died once before.

Leila Malkal (レイラ・マルカル, Reira Marukaru) has very long, blond hair and light purple eyes. Leila comes from a family of former Britannian aristocrats and she is a military officer in the E.U. Army. She works under Gene Smilas and is Akito Hyuga's superior and the Commander of the W-0 Unit comprised of Japanese teenagers who recklessly plunge into a battlefield where the survival rate is extremely low. They fight for their freedom, so that they can have a country that they can return to that feels like “home”. Thus begins their fight against the adult worldLeila Malkal is the daughter of a Britannian noble family that disagreed with the dated system of rule in the empire, which made them defect to the E.U. as exiles. Born in Europe, Leila was adopted by the Malkal family after the deaths of her parents. She became a Major in the E.U. Army and originally served as an adjutant to Commander Anou in the W-0 Unit. Leila planned the military operation known as Operation Alpha with the objective of rescuing the surrounded 132nd Regiment in Narva. However, Leila confronted Anou over his last minute decision to use Japanese youngsters for suicide attacks and finally removed Anou from his command position. After the success of the operation, she was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant Colonel by General Smilas and given direct command of the W-0 Unit.In the first episode, it was directly implied that she may have a Geass power during the sequence where she stood up to her commanding officer. The specifics of this ability currently remain unknown. Later it was confirmed in the official guidebook of Akito the Exiled episode 2 C.C.'s story manga showing her getting Geass from C.C. at a young age saying that she wants to end status quo.

Trivia

  • "Leila" is a widely renowned Arabic and Hebrew female name stemming from Semitic roots meaning "night". Alternatively, it can mean "born at night" or "dark beauty".
  • "Malkal" could refer to the Malkals, a major ethnic group residing in the Tikrai Valley in Pakistan. The name "Malkal" or "Malkaal" itself is derived from the fusion of two Arabic terms: "Malik" (A King/ One who rules) and "Aal" (family of), thus "Family of the King" or "Family of the one who rules". This makes sense given that Geass is considered "the Power of the Kings" and Leila possesses a Geass.
