WARNINGThis wiki contains a plethora of spoilers related to the Code Geass series, including information that are not yet released. This is your only warning, read at your own risk!

Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion, often referred to as simply Code Geass, is a Japanese anime seriescreated by Sunrise, directed by Gorō Taniguchi, and written by Ichirō Ōkouchi, with original character designs by Clamp.

"Code Geass" first ran in Japan on MBS from October 5, 2006, to July 28, 2007. Its sequel series, Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion R2, ran on MBS and TBS from April 6, 2008 to September 28, 2008. Both seasons have won several awards at the Tokyo International Anime FairAnimage Anime Grand Prix, and Animation Kobe event.

Plot

History

Prior to the start of the show, the Eleventh Prince, Lelouch vi Britannia and his sister, Princess Nunnally vi Britannialived with their strict father, the Emperor, and caring mother in the capital city of the Holy Britannian Empire,Pendragon. When Lelouch was ten, and Nunnally was six, their mother was shot to death. Ultimately, Nunnally was caught in the crossfire and could no longer walk, and was blinded from trauma of seeing her mother murdered. Lelouch became angry that his father did nothing to solve the murder and renounced his anointment to the throne, and he and his sister were thereof placed in the care of the Kururugi shrine, in Japan. In this time Suzaku Kururugi, became friends with Lelouch, but they were separated from each other because of the war, which ended Japan's existence in 2010 in the given calendar. The area's name became "Area 11" as a mocking gesture to the month long defeat of the nation. Later they were taken in by the Ashford Academy, run by the Ashford Foundation of which their mother was a test pilot for. They were given a maid, Sayoko Shinozaki, to assist with the care of Nunnally, and they lived in hiding for years.

First Season

Lelouch is a high school student with a knack for gambling high on chess games, an I.Q. that well exceeded being a genius along with a hatred for all things higher in rank or social class than him. He is generally caring, yet lazy, but has a dark desire to destroy anything and everything that pollutes the world with lies and anarchy, ultimately wanting global dominance and peace proceeding. When he is accidently trapped along with some terrorists and then confronted by the Britannian military as being an involved, at which point a girl with green hair blocks a coming bullet to prevent Lelouch from taking it. She's declared dead, but moves after the shock, bleeding from the head, and grabs Lelouch's hand, announcing a contract that will allow him to live. She collapses and Lelouch opens his eyes to reveal a bird shaped, pink and crimson iris that releases an ability of absolute obedience. He announces his real name in a command and orders the guards to commit suicide which they do with glee.
Afterwhich Lelouch uses his keen intellect to lead the terrorists in their fight, but it ends in a draw when Suzaku appears in a new knightmare, which is the primary weapon in the show, a semi-human mecha-robot. Lelouch retreats, returning to Ashford Academy, where the girl who reveals herself to be C.C. (said as C2) meets up with him, and apparently stays the night, claiming that their contract requires her to keep close to the current user of Geass.
Lelouch becomes "Zero" a C.E.O. figure for the "Black Knights" the recently organized terrorist group, which he intends to use to take back Japan, and following that, the world. After a series of victories, during the final battle for Japan Lelouch retreats to help his sister, resulting in the loss of the battle. Suzaku having captured Lelouch gives him to the emperor where it is revealed that he too has a geass, his with the power to alter a persons memory; Which he uses to erase Lelouch's memory of being a prince, of his sister, and of being Zero.

Second Season

The second season logo as it appeared on the first opening.
In the second season a similar sequence of battles as seen in Season One occur, but Lelouch succeeds in destroying the Geass Order that was used to manufacture geass-users and is a primary source of antagonist involvements. The Emperor used this chance to take his brothers immortality in order to complete his goal "The Ragnarök Connection."
When Lelouch's identity is revealed to the Black Knights, they view his efforts as being ungenuine, and attempt to eliminate him; Before this can happen, he is saved by Rolo, who sacrifices his life using his defective Geass to escape. Having his resolve restored, Lelouch then faces his father, and finds out that his mother had survived and supported his father; Knowing this he uses his Geass to command the collective consciousness of the World of C to prevent his father from "stopping the hands of time." A month later he appears in the capital of the Holy Britannian Empire, Pendragon and declares himself the next emperor. Lelouch teams up with Suzaku in order to complete the "Zero Requiem."
While his father's plan would have had wanted to live in the "past," his brother Schneizel is revealed to have his own plan for world peace, through fear, effectively living continually in the present, never moving forward. In order to complete the Zero Requiem, Lelouch takes command of the Schneizel ultimate weapon, the Damocles, effectively eliminating all adversaries, and focusing the hate of the world towards himself. After which to complete the Zero Requiem, Suzaku disguised as Zero assassinates Lelouch, thus the hatred of the world is dispelled.

Production

Code Geass began as a concept developed at Sunrise by Ichirō Ōkouchi and Gorō Taniguchi, who proposed it to producer Yoshitaka Kawaguchi while they were working on Overman King Gainer and later Planetes. The initial concept of the plot consisted of a secret organization led by a "hero," which was later developed into a conflict between two people with differing values of morality, belonging to the same military unit. During these early planning stages, Kawaguchi contacted the noted manga artist group Clamp, the first time Clamp had ever been requested to design the characters of an anime series. Clamp signed onto the project early during these development stages and provided numerous ideas, which helped develop the series' setting and characters. While developing the character designs for Lelouch Lamperouge, the protagonist of the series, Clamp had initially conceived of his hair color as being white. Ageha Ohkawa, head writer at Clamp, said she had visualized him as being a character to which "everyone" could relate to as being "cool", literally, a "beauty". During these planning stages, Clamp and the Sunrise staff had discussed a number of possible inspirations for the characters, including KinKi Kids and Tackey & Tsubasa. They had wanted to create a "hit show," a series which would appeal to "everyone." Lelouch's alter ego, Zero, was one of the earliest developed characters, with Ōkouchi having wanted a mask to be included as a part of the series, feeling it was necessary for it to be a Sunrise show, and Clamp wanting a unique design never prior seen in any Sunrise series (said mask was nicknamed "tulip" for its distinctive design). Clamp's finalized original character design art, illustrated by its lead artist Mokona, was subsequently converted into animation character designs for the series by Sunrise's character designer Takahiro Kimura, who had previously spent "every day" analyzing Clamp's art and style from their artbooks and manga series. In working on the animation character designs, he focused on designing them so as to enable the series' other animators to apply them without deviating from Clamp's original art style. The music for the series was composed by Kōtarō Nakagawa and Hitomi Kuroishi, who had earlier worked with the series' core staff in Planetes and Taniguchi's earlier work Gun X Sword. In addition to the incidental music featured in each episode, Kuroishi also composed numerous insert songs for the series, including "Stories", "Masquerade", "Alone", and "Innocent Days", which were each performed by Kuroishi herself, while "Picaresque" and "Callin'" were performed by the singer-songwriter Mikio Sakai, who had also earlier worked with Nakagawa and Kuroishi in Planetes. The bands FLOW, Ali Project, Jinn, SunSet Swish, Access, and Orange Range have provided songs for the opening and ending themes. When the series was being developed for broadcast on Mainichi Broadcasting System, it had been given the network's Saturday evening prime time slot, which was later changed to a Thursday late night time slot. Due to this change, the overall outlook and some elements of the series were changed and further developed to suit the more mature, late night audience.

Reception

When the first episode was shown during a special test screening, which was attended by Ōkawa, other members of the series' staff, as well as several journalists and other media-related personnel in response to the hype surrounding the series' upcoming release, the audience fell into immediate silence after it ended, followed by "tremendous applause." By August 2008, over 900,000 Code Geass discs have been sold in Japan. Reportedly, Bandai Visual shipped over one million DVD and Blu-ray Discs related to the Code Geass franchise by November 2008, placing it among the most popular contemporary anime series in both Japan and North America. During 2008, the first volume from R2 was the fourth bestselling anime DVD and Blu-ray Disc in Japan according to Amazon.com. Since its premiere, Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion has collected numerous awards and accolades. At the sixth annual Tokyo Anime Awards held at the 2007 Tokyo International Anime Fair, Code Geass won the best TV anime series award. The second season also got the award of "Best Screenplay" in the 2009 Tokyo Anime Fair. In noted Japanese anime magazine Animage's 29th Annual Anime Grand Prix, Code Geass won the most popular series award, with Lelouch Lamperouge also being chosen as the most popular male character and "Colors" being chosen as the most popular song. In the 30th Annual Anime Grand Prix, Lelouch won first place again and C.C. was voted most popular female character. At the first Seiyū Awards held in 2007, Jun Fukuyama won the award for best actor in a leading role for his performance as Lelouch Lamperouge in the series, while Ami Koshimizu won the award for best actress in a supporting role for her performance as Kallen Stadtfeld. Furthermore, Code Geass won the award for Best TV Animation at the twelfth Animation Kobe event, held annually in Kobe, Hyōgo Prefecture, with R2 taking the award in the following year. In the 2009, Seiun Award, Code Geass R2 was a nominee in the category "Best Media Award". Anime News Network's columnist Todd Ciolek attributes the soaring popularity of Code Geass to "the series hitting every important fan sector," with the audience appeal points ranging from a "complex cast of characters and a fast-paced story, told with Goro Taniguchi's capable direction" for "general-interest fans" to "pretty and just-a-little-broken heroes" for "yaoi-buying female fans." Carl Kimlinger also finds that the series "has the skill and energy to carry viewers over the top with it, where they can spend a pleasurable few hours reveling in its melodramatic charms." He also adds that Taniguchi "executes the excesses of his series with care, skillfully intercutting events as Lelouch's plans come together (or fall apart) and using kinetic mecha combat". Columnist Carlo Santos of Anime News Network wrote that the franchise "in a way, [...] reflects the malaise of a generation: the realization that old, rich, powerful people have screwed up the world and that the young are helpless to do anything about it". According to him, Lelouch's actions exemplify the wish to see problems like "economic collapse, class conflict, political instability, radical extremism" solved by "Zero's vigilante methods" but Santos expresses doubt in such an approach and concludes that "the series is at its best when raising questions rather than offering a final solution".

Setting

Code Geass is set in an alternate universe where three superpowers, the Holy Britannian Empire, the Chinese Federation, and the European Union have divided up control of the world (with the exception of an independent Australia) and maintain a tentative balance for the first part of the series. The balance shifts in the second season as the E.U. has much of its territory conquered by Britannia while Lelouch engineers a revolution in the Chinese Federation and creates a new alliance of countries, the United Federation of Nations, reducing the number of superpowers to two.

Lelouch Lamperouge (ルルーシュ・ランペルージ Rurūshu Ranperūji?) is the protagonist of Code Geass. He is originally born as Lelouch vi Britannia (ルルーシュ・ヴィ・ブリタニア Rurūshu vi Buritania?), the Eleventh Prince of the Britannian Imperial Family and seventeenth in line for the throne. His father is the Britannian Emperor, Charles zi Britannia, and his mother was Marianne vi Britannia. For questioning his father's cold apathy of his mother's assassination and his sister Nunnally's disablement, Lelouch and Nunnally were sent to Japan as political hostages. Taken into the residence of the Prime Minister of Japan, Lelouch and Nunnally soon formed a strong friendship with the Prime Minister's son, Suzaku Kururugi. When Britannia invaded Japan, he went into hiding with his sister, taking refuge with the Ashford family. Seven years later, he discovers a girl known as C.C., who grants Geass, an ability that allows him to command any person to follow his subsequent order. Seeking to build a peaceful world for his sister, he pursues the destruction of Britannia under the guise of his masked alter-ego, Zero. As Zero, he creates a military force known as the Black Knights, formed from the members of a group originally known as the Japanese Resistance. Although Lelouch serves as a brilliant strategist in the organization he created, he is oblivious to his admirers.

Suzaku Kururugi

Voiced by: Takahiro Sakurai (Japanese), Yuri Lowenthal (English)
Suzaku Kururugi (枢木 スザク Kururugi Suzaku?) is Lelouch's childhood friend and son of Japan's last prime minister, Genbu Kururugi. In contrast to Lelouch, he claims that achieving results by wrong or illegal methods is meaningless, wanting to change Britannia from within. As such, he is aligned against Zero's Black Knights, but nevertheless intent on changing the Britannian Empire for the better. Suzaku is an Honorary Britannian and part of the Britannian army, later becoming the pilot of the experimental Knightmare FrameLancelot as a member of the R&D Division. In the second season, Suzaku is granted a position in the Knights of the Round by the Emperor for his capture of Zero.

C.C.

Voiced by: Yukana (Japanese), Kate Higgins (English)
C.C. (シー・ツー Shī Tsū?, pronounced "C Two") is an immortal "witch" who bestows the power of Geass upon Lelouch under the condition he grants her greatest wish. She oversees Lelouch's activities and occasionally assists in his plans in order to ensure that he remains alive to fulfill their contract.

Kallen Stadtfeld

Voiced by: Ami Koshimizu (Japanese), Karen Strassman (English)
Kallen Stadtfeld (カレン・シュタットフェルト Karen Shutattoferuto?) is a half-Britannian, half-Japanese teenage girl. Her father is Britannian and her mother is an Eleven; her father comes from a prestigious Britannian family, known as the Stadtfeld family, which Kallen benefits from. She attends the Ashford Academy, where she pretends to be ill to explain her prolonged absences. She later becomes a member of its student council and one of the school's most outstanding students. In school, she is known by her legal name but she prefers her mother's maiden name Kallen Kōzuki (紅月カレン Kōzuki Karen?) during her revolutionary activities. Kallen is a member of a Japanese resistance cell originally led by her brother, who died before the series, and later joins Zero's Black Knights. She is the group's most talented pilot and on par with the Knights of the Round. Throughout the series, her devotion to Zero is unmatched among any of the other members of the Black Knights. She is one of the few people that understands that Zero Requiem was intended to turn the whole world against Lelouch, creating a global catharsis when he has himself killed.

ASHFORD ACADEMY
Ashford Academy (アッシュフォード学園 Asshufōdo Gakuen?) is a Britannian private academy in Tokyo, owned and operated by the Ashford Foundation (アッシュフォード財団 Asshufōdo Zaidan?), a philanthropic organization involved predominantly in the supply of educational services, founded by the formerly noble Ashford House. It is attended by Lelouch and Nunnally, who, owing to their mother's past relationship with the Ashfords, have been granted free residence within the campus's Student Government Clubhouse. In the manga, it is implied that the academy itself was once Japanese owned and operated.
Nunnally Lamperouge
Voiced by: Kaori Nazuka (Japanese), Rebecca Forstadt (English)
Main article: Nunnally Lamperouge
Nunnally Lamperouge (ナナリー・ランペルージ Nanarī Ranperūji?) is Lelouch's younger sister, originally born as Nunnally vi Britannia. Injured in her mother Marianne's brutal assassination, she is wheelchair-bound and blind from psychological trauma. It is on her behalf that Lelouch pursues the destruction of Britannia and the forging of a peaceful world. Following her return to the Imperial Family in the second season, she retakes her birth name, Nunnally vi Britannia, and is at her own request appointed Viceroy of Area 11.
Milly Ashford

Milly enjoys teasing Shirley and is eager to discover Lelouch's weaknesses. Milly is aware of Lelouch's identity as a former prince of Britannia, her family having supported Empress Marianne. Marianne's assassination led to the family's nobility status being stripped. Consequently, the Ashfords arrange for Milly to marry Earl Lloyd Asplund to restore it. After the events of the first season, Milly remains a student on campus because she failed her examinations, although it is noted that she did so on purpose to remain on campus with her friends. In the second season, she eventually earns enough credits to graduate and after graduating she becomes a reporter on the local TV news and breaks off her engagement with Lloyd in an effort to become more true to herself.

Shown in-series and in the DVD-exclusive bonus material, Rivalz forms a fast friendship with Suzaku after he joins the student council at Lelouch's request. Rivalz's real surname is not Cardemonde, which is his mother's maiden name that he uses after his parents became estranged.[3]

Code Geass Akito the Exile

On Monday, November 25, 2013 0 comments

Code Geass: Akito the Exiled (コードギアス 亡国のアキト, Kōdo Giasu
Bōkoku no Akito) is a theatrical OVA. It was officially announced in the bonus materials o of Code Geass: The Miraculous Birthday. The new theatrical OVA is directed by Kazuki Akane (Tenkuu no Escaflowne, Noein: Mou Hitori no Kimi e) and once again features original character designs by CLAMP. The story occurs between seasons one and two of Code Geass.

So, I finally found the time to watch the first part of the Code Geass Gaiden (spin-off) Akito the Exiled, which (for reasons I still have to find out) is called “The Wyvern has landed” (at the moment it can still be found on YouTube), and as is always the case with Code Geass, most people in the show are either psychopaths or very troubled or both (yes, I know, this is what actually gets the show going, but it also makes it very depressing).

The hero after whom the show is named, Akito Hyuuga, seems to belong to the “troubled” category. He’s a Japanese (or “Eleven”, as they are again called, even in Europe) who fights alongside other Japanese volunteers for the EU, which mostly uses them for suicide missions because sacrificing their own soldiers would create too much negative publicity (remember how Charles defined “democracy”? - “Rabble politics by a popularity contest”).  Although he seems a bit girlish, what with his ponytail and a uniform that gives him rather broad hips, he’s quite the tough fighter and a great Knightmare pilot. Compared to Lelouch, he clearly lacks his psychological depth, but on the positive side, he is also less of a prickschemer. He’s possibly under the influence of some Geass similar to the one Lelouch put on Suzaku, while he seems to have a brother (at least there’s someone who shares the same surname) who possesses a Geass similar to Lelouch’s.
His superior officer, Leila Malcal, is the child of Britannian aristocrats and also in exile. Her main problem seems to be that her stepfather (who takes obesity in anime to a new level) wants to marry her to her own stepbrother, who seems to qualify for the rank of bastard first class, as he does not mind humiliating her in public. If we want to compare again, she is no C.C. either, but at least she’s trying to do the right thing rather than just being Akito’s “partner in crime”.

We also learn some interesting facts about the E.U. (is it still supposed to stand for Euro Universe?), which seems to be dominated by France, as Paris is obviously its capital and all the documents we get to see are written in French. We are told that Napoleon was decapitated for trying to establish a dictatorship and we can assume that France used the hegemony that Napoleon had achieved to spread the ideals of the French Revolution all over Europe, and thus they became even more prevalent than in real history (remember Charles speaking of “the E.U. making equality a right”?) and it seems that Europen aristocrats are therefore inclined to support the Britannians. In spite of that, E.U. politicians seem to be just as ruthless and power-hungry as the Britannians. (Which is, maybe, not totally unrealistic. In fact, I can see the real-world E.U. develop in a similar direction.) Leila’s general even goes as far as to claim that a benevolent dicatorship would be preferrable to that (political correctness is clearly not Sunrise’s major concern). Moreover, the fact that Notre Dame is in ruins makes me fear that the E.U. has become as un- or even anti-Christian as the “Holy” Britannian Empire (whose sheer name is a travesty).

And then there’s the Japanese refugees. Again, the Japanese/Elevens are the underdogs of the show, either forced into ghettos or used as cannon fodder by the E.U., having to fight for their freedom and dignity at home and in exile. One wonders what kind of message this is supposed to convey to the Japanese audience.
At any rate, I’m one again captivated by the show and looking forward to the second part, ESPECIALLY since it obiously has Suzaku in it (and also C.C.).

Akito is an E.U. Knightmare Pilot with a rank of lieutenant from a special force, called W-0, that consists of boys and girls from Area 11. He is shown to be piloting the Knightmare FramesGardmareand Alexander.
It appears that he may be mentally unstable, as he is shown to enjoy battle to the point of blood lust, yet he appears completely calm under normal situations. He has a lack of emotion, not tending to display or express his emotions in anyway. He also mentions that he "has died before." At this time it is equally possible that this is due to mental instability.
Akito is under the effects of Geass that he appears to control at will, allowing him to savagely kill his enemies in the battlefield. When he used Alexander to ambush and destroy a full squad of Britannian Knightmare Frames, the enemy pilots referred to him as "Hannibal's Ghost".
Akito can also see the spirits of his fallen comrades and claims that he has already died once.
He, along with his other Japanese comrades, participated in a military operation with a survival rate of 5% in order to allow the E.U.Army's 132nd Regiment to escape from Narva. Akito was shown fighting the BritannianKnightmares using the Alexander. During the battle there was a red outline circling his pupils, which indicates that he had been previously Geassed. He also managed to destroy all his opponents without any difficulty and, although the military operation came out as a success, Akito turned out to be the only survivor while the rest of his comrades all ended up dead.
Following these events, he joined the retreating troops of the 132nd Regiment and returned to the western part of Europe. Akito was promoted to Lieutenant and then assigned to escort his superior, Leila Malkal. During the failed attempt to kidnap General Gene Smilas by a Japanese terrorist group, he piloted a Gardmare against Ryo Sayama's Glasgow. However, his Knightmare Frame gets destroyed during the battle. He then engages in battle with a grenade launcher and was able to defeat Ryo by bringing his Knightmare Frame down singlehandedly.
He is later shown digging a grave for his fallen comrades who had died in the previous military operation. Akito seems to be able to communicate to the spirits of his fallen comrades and also claims that he had died once before.

Leila Malkal (レイラ・マルカル, Reira Marukaru) has very long, blond hair and light purple eyes. Leila comes from a family of former Britannian aristocrats and she is a military officer in the E.U. Army. She works under Gene Smilas and is Akito Hyuga's superior and the Commander of the W-0 Unit comprised of Japanese teenagers who recklessly plunge into a battlefield where the survival rate is extremely low. They fight for their freedom, so that they can have a country that they can return to that feels like “home”. Thus begins their fight against the adult worldLeila Malkal is the daughter of a Britannian noble family that disagreed with the dated system of rule in the empire, which made them defect to the E.U. as exiles. Born in Europe, Leila was adopted by the Malkal family after the deaths of her parents. She became a Major in the E.U. Army and originally served as an adjutant to Commander Anou in the W-0 Unit. Leila planned the military operation known as Operation Alpha with the objective of rescuing the surrounded 132nd Regiment in Narva. However, Leila confronted Anou over his last minute decision to use Japanese youngsters for suicide attacks and finally removed Anou from his command position. After the success of the operation, she was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant Colonel by General Smilas and given direct command of the W-0 Unit.In the first episode, it was directly implied that she may have a Geass power during the sequence where she stood up to her commanding officer. The specifics of this ability currently remain unknown. Later it was confirmed in the official guidebook of Akito the Exiled episode 2 C.C.'s story manga showing her getting Geass from C.C. at a young age saying that she wants to end status quo.

Trivia

  • "Leila" is a widely renowned Arabic and Hebrew female name stemming from Semitic roots meaning "night". Alternatively, it can mean "born at night" or "dark beauty".
  • "Malkal" could refer to the Malkals, a major ethnic group residing in the Tikrai Valley in Pakistan. The name "Malkal" or "Malkaal" itself is derived from the fusion of two Arabic terms: "Malik" (A King/ One who rules) and "Aal" (family of), thus "Family of the King" or "Family of the one who rules". This makes sense given that Geass is considered "the Power of the Kings" and Leila possesses a Geass.
